SUMMARY:OpenUK London Meetup #8: Future of Open Source in 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join OpenUK on Tuesday 24 October for our next OpenUK community meetup\, which has us starting to think about what we want open source to look like in 2024. What roles are needed? \nHow can we create stronger communities? Any project goals? Anything the OpenUK community can help with? \nWe wont have a speaker at this event as it’s a fishbowl and this is your opportunity to swim in our bowl and share your thoughts on the future of open source software. \nEvery attendee – online or in person – can chose to put their name forward into a prize draw to win a free ticket to the Second Annual State of Open Con taking place on 7-8 February\, 2024\, in central London. So this won’t be a night to be missed! \n6:30pm: Arrive\, grab a bev\, a slice and a chat.\n7:30pm: We will kick off with a couple ice breakers and then jump right into the main event.\n7:45pm: The main activity format will be a fishbowl:\nfive seats at the front of the room\, with one always empty.\nIf a fifth sits down\, one of the others gets up. A continuous discussion that flows around a topic. Anyone is welcome to jump right into the “bowl” at any time with questions\, topics or responses.\n(Live stream will also allow remote joiners to participate)\n8:45-9pm: Raffle winner announcement\, cleanup and goodbyes. \nEverybody is also welcome to join online. \nWe will even have a computer ready to fill that fourth seat if online participants raise their hands to join the discussion. DESCRIPTION:Join us September 19th to discuss the hot topic of 2023: Artificial Intelligence (AI). \nAI is much talked about\, everywhere from the news\, in Parliament\, to the boardroom and pubs across the country\, but\, what really is AI\, and how does openness matter with it? \nTo get things kicked off\, Matt Armstrong-Barnes from HPE will present a level set on AI\, what it is\, who is using it\, what it is being used for\, and possible directions. \nNext Wendy Ding from the Alan Turing Institute and contributor to the recent OpenUK AI Openness Report will discuss the importance of open in AI and why open approaches lead to better results. \nFood and drinks will be provided and there will be plenty of time to chat with other attendees and debate with the speakers. \nThank you once again to Avanade for sponsoring the venue and providing the refreshments. \nMatt Armstrong-Barnes \nAs a Chief Technologist at Hewlett Packard Enterprise\, Matt has a passion for artificial intelligence and data science. \nHe has held senior management positions and been accountable for the overall architecture (including Business\, Security\, Integration and Technology)\, technical risks\, IT strategy\, and technology change for customers. \nHe holds a Degree in Computer Science\, with a Masters in Artificial Intelligence. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology\, Chartered Fellow of the British Computer Society\, Chartered IT Professional and Chair of Smart Cities at TechUK\, and was awarded the title of Chartered Engineer by the Engineering Council. \nWendy Ding \nJennifer Ding is a senior researcher at The Alan Turing Institute\, co-leading the Research Application Management (RAM) team. Previously\, she was a startup founder and data scientist at several public interest tech companies\, creating data products for industry and government partners. DESCRIPTION:Details\n\n\nJoin us at Avanade’s new offices\, 30 Fenchurch Street! \nJuly’s meetup is the last in the series of community before we take a break in August and prepare to get things going again in September. \nOur first speaker is Robert Castelo\, long time contributor to open source web content management system Drupal. As well as being a key contributor to Drupal security\, Robert has led the London and UK Drupal community since 2005\, running meetups\, delivering training\, and consulting on large projects. Robert will describe his experiences of working in the community\, why a community of users is vital for project success\, and what newer communities can learn from those more established. \nOur second speaker is Angus Fox who will talk about managing the politics of community. Angus helped organise the UK Twitter development community for over 10 years during which time both the Twitter community and Twitter company had strong\, often different opinions on which direction to take.
