SUMMARY:Webinar: COP26 and beyond: How IT can help achieve net zero
DESCRIPTION:BCS President\, John Higgins CBE FBCS\, chairs a focused analysis of IT’s critical place in addressing the climate crisis.\nPanel chair\nBCS President\, John Higgins CBE FBCS \nPanellists\n\nAmanda Brock CEO\, Open UK\nJohn Booth MBCS\, CDCAP\, CDCSP\, Carbon3IT\nAdam Leon Smith CITP FBCS\n\nAgenda\n13:00 – Webinar starts on Zoom\n14:30 – Close \nSynopsis\nCOP26 brought the world’s attention to bear on climate change and the need to deliver net zero within a shrinking time frame. \nMany smart\, internationally agreed\, well financed\, equitable and timely solutions are needed. The task seems huge but\, we do have a powerful ally: technology. \nTech can play a leading part in achieving net zero – if there is the global political will and funding to do so\, according to a recent press release published by BCS. \nA panel of BCS experts chaired by our President\, John Higgins CBE FBCS\, explores our industry’s role and the contribution it can make to achieving net zero. \nMomentum around this critical topic is gathering and so is necessity. \nCOP27 will take place in Sharm El-Sheikh\, Egypt on 7-18 November 2022. As such\, the online session will be interactive. \nPlease come prepared with questions for our experts\, many of whom are part of the new BCS Fellows Technical Advisory Group (F-TAG). \nOur events are for adults aged 16 years and over. \nFor overseas delegates who wish to attend the event\, please note that BCS does not issue invitation letters. \nThis event is brought to you by: BCS The Chartered Institute for IT

SUMMARY:Data Sharing for Data Science
DESCRIPTION:Combining data in surprising ways is a powerful technique in data science. For example\, weather data combined with the right economic indicators can improve retail demand forecasting\, but weather data combined with socio-economic indicators is also being used to prevent insect-borne disease. Whatever the data combination you’re looking for\, data sharing is often a key step\, and this can bring its own surprising challenges. Data sharing is not just a matter of getting permission. It also requires discovering who has the data you need\, how to access it\, how to deal with mismatches between different data sets and much more. \nPlease join us as our panelists share stories from their different experiences to dig into the technical and organizational challenges of data sharing and what you can do about them. We’ll also discuss new data initiatives including European-based Gaia-X and Linux Foundation’s Agstack among others. \nData scientists\, data engineers\, CDOs\, CTOs\, CIOs and data architects all should find this event useful. \n*FOR FULL SPEAKER BIOS PLEASE VISIT MEETUP \nSPEAKERS:\nEllen Friedman – Principal Technologist\, Hewlett Packard Enterprise + frmr committer Apache Software projects [MODERATOR]\nTed Dunning – CTO\, Data Fabric\, Hewlett Packard Enterprise + frmr CTO at MapR\nJoanna McKenzie – Principal Data Scientist\, The Data Lab – Innovation Centre\nSuparna Bhattacharya – Distinguished Technologist\, HPE AI Research

SUMMARY:Command-Line Interface Design: Philosophy and Practice
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve ever used a terminal\, you know that it can be a confusing\, inconsistent\, even hostile experience. If you’ve ever tried to write programs for the terminal\, you start to understand why: very few conventions and best practices exist\, and those that do are hard to find. \nThis absence led me and some friends to write the Command Line Interface Guidelines (CLIG.dev)\, an open-source set of guidelines for designing command-line programs\, based partly on experience building and maintaining programs such as Docker Compose. CLIG is part philosophy and part practical advice; in this talk\, Aanand will take you through what he considers to be the most important parts of both\, and hopefully inspire you to create delightful command-line programs of your own. \nAanand Prasad is an engineer and former startup founder who has been making command-line tools for 12 years\, the most well-known one being Docker Compose. He’s originally from London\, and is currently building frontend architecture at Squarespace in New York.
