Dear Readers,
A belated Happy New Year and welcome to OpenUK’s first 2024 update, which starts with a celebration of our incredible UK community and code contributors. We are celebrating 65 of the top UK contributors in our New Year’s Honours List announced today. The y live across the 4 nations from the Shetland Isles, Calendar and Dundee in Scotland to Derry in Norther Ireland, Barry in Wales, and across England, with unsurprising Hubs in Cambridge and London.
We are celebrating these leaders today and also thinking about the skills that folk based across the UK can develop through contribution to open source projects – skills in coding and the wider range of skills required by the tech sector. We will be sharing this with Parliamentarians on 16 January at an evening roundtable at 5.30pm in the House of Commons.
We have limited spaces and if you would like to attend contact admin@openuk.uk We will be sharing the potential open source has to build skills and careers and how it currently forms the submarine under the UK and global digital economies as we discussed in our report.
Our next AI report will be published in late January right before State of Open Con 24, which will include yet to be released plenary sessions focusing on The Future of Open Source and AI Openness. We will also be launching our AI area shortly.
OpenUK’s 2024 New Year’s Honours List
OpenUK is absolutely delighted to share its fourth New Year’s Honours List. For 2024, this is celebrating code contribution by individuals across the UK and we honour 65 of out top contributors.
OpenUK has partnered with Runa Capital and Onalytica to analyse data from a variety of sources in creating this list.
The New Year’s Honours list is a British tradition, marking the achievement of extraordinary people in the UK. The Honours system is designed to recognise contribution, achievement and service. We congratulate all individuals who are honoured on the 2024 list, one based entirely on individual merit. Congratulations to all on the list!

4 weeks to State of Open Con 24!
State of Open Con 24, is a unique conference sitting at the intersection of engineering, law, policy and business, but also through its inclusion of all areas of open technology – software, hardware, data, standards, AI and more. It takes place at the Brewery in London on 6 and 7 February, with a free-to-view stream of the plenaries and all 8 tracks. Our content has gone live across 8 tracks and we have already onboarded 150 speakers and 50 partners.
Over the next week or two we will be announcing our plenary speakers and Delegate Experience across the next couple of weeks.
You can volunteer to be part of the event staff and receive a free ticket for one day by working the other day. Volunteers also receive an exclusive event kit. Join our warm and welcoming community and learn more about Open Technology. We will be closing the registration for volunteers this week.
Tickets are on sale at the heavily subsidised price of £199 with free tickets available for community, students and the unemployed. We hope to see many of you join us as speakers, volunteers and attendees. For free tickets email admin@openuk.uk.
We’re grateful to our sponsors whose generosity allows us to sell heavily subsidised tickets and support community tickets to make SOOCon24 an inclusive event. This is part of the EDI considerations that have led our event to receive a CHAOSS Gold Medal for a second consecutive year.
Our many table holders bring their projects and businesses to our Delegate Experience area at SOOCon24 so join us to meet them and learn more.
