Madeleine Nielsen

Madeleine is a PhD researcher at the intersection of computational social science, AI, and complexity theory. Her focus is on modelling the cumulative harms (autonomy erosion, polarisation, allocative harm, over-reliance) from recommender systems and questioning their pervasive roles in our lives. RSs have expanded far beyond entertainment and retail into high-stakes domains where harms are much more consequential, such as healthcare, academia, and education. Madeleine uses agent-based modelling to reveal the conditions under which these harms emerge, which populations are most exposed, and how different policy choices produce divergent outcomes.
