India 6th globally in AI repositories but fastest growing in 2025 to date
The number of AI repositories with 1K+ stars that use an open source licence, from India grew by 38% in in 2025, to May 31. India is globally sixth in repositories with 1k+ GitHub stars and open source licences.
Over the last 3 years India’s open source repositories have grown 68%.
India has deep AI Skills
With 18m+ GitHub accounts India is seen to be second largest globally and projected by GitHub to be number 1 by 2028.
When it comes to AI India is the world’s second largest contributor, despite its sixth place in repository ownership. This shows a large skilled workforce.
Downloads of AI that’s open grew 4x year on year, at highest level in the world.
India and the UK have high level of collaboration
Whilst India collaborates most on open source projects with the US, its second highest collaboration is with UK, despite the UK’s diminutive size.
