Dear Readers,

We are delighted to share our latest report focusing on skills in open source on a UK level, in the global context. The UK remains Europe’s leader in open source and sees GitHub accounts surpassing the 5million mark, to 5.5million and 7.9% per capita for the first time. The opportunity to evolve much needed early stage skills through open source contributions – ever more important in an AI and sovereignty-focused world – is also explored.

The report will be complemented in the next few weeks with our State of Open Source in the UK this summer, and our survey to enable economic calculations on the value of open source will be shared in May.

Open Source Skills Report 2026

OpenUK’s updated skills report analyses the latest data on open source and AI skills with a UK lens and a global mindset. Dr Rebecca Taylor’s work on maintainers and unpaid work is also showcased.

The value of open source skills and the contribution to both capacity and future leadership are also explored.

Board and Staff Update

We are delighted to have Dr Rebecca Rumbul, CEO and ED of the Rust Foundation, appointed as OpenUK’s Board Chair.  We are sure that Becc’s experience, engagement and influence in the global open source ecosystem will bring a great deal to our Board’s work.

This news also offers the ideal opportunity to extend our heartfelt thanks to Martin Woodward, who steps down from the Board Chair role but remains a Board member.  We are grateful to all he has contributed in his organisational leadership.

Our research and reporting function has been strengthened by the addition of Karan Saiain, joining us as Research Manager and our policy work with Sal Kimmich’s appointment as Policy Manager. They bring an unprecedented depth of experience in open source to OpenUK’s work.

SOOCon26 On The Road

Our first two events are now fixed in Edinburgh on 5th June and Cambridge on 8th July. Edinburgh will focus on the AI stack whilst in a year of Artemis 2’s space mission, Cambridge will see a focus on Space and open technology. We will be launching a Space Tech Radar at this event, as a collaboration between OpenUK’s Space Advisory Board and Thoughtworks.

Tickets for Edinburgh and our keynote speakers will be announced on 30th April in a special SOOCon newsletter. Cambridge will follow shortly thereafter, along with the dates for Bristol and Belfast.
