Dear Readers,
Hard to believe that 2024 is rapidly heading to year end. It’s been another packed year and we’ll be sharing a retrospective with you soon. We’ll share the CFP for State of Open Con 25 taking place in London on 4 and 5 February in November and tickets will also go on sale.
I’m heading to the Linux Foundation Member Summit this month, along with many open source leaders and look forward to reporting back on this gathering. It continues to be a challenging time for open source, with many layoffs, regulations and geopolitical shifts having its impact. There will be some important conversations to report on.
On a happier note, OpenUK is part of the United Nations’s COP29 focusing on open tech and sustainability, as we did at COP26 in Glasgow. I am part of the first Digital Day, as a speaker in the launch event, “High Level” (Ministerial Panel) in the Blue Zone and OpenUK will be in the Green Zone, hosting an open source workshop and I will be giving a short keynote there. We look forward to sharing the outputs of the OpenUK COP29 Workshop early December. You can expect to also see more on data centres.
Our House of Lords Round Tables have proven a great success and we have already sold out the AI Openness one in December. That will coincide with our next AI Openness Report which will update on the new OSI Open Source AI Definition, and much more. There is a wait list for that event and a few places remaining for our session on 7 November focusing on developing Tech Skills using Open Source.
We are also hosting a Christmas Cracker end of year event, with an afternoon of AI discussions followed by a Christmas Drinks on 17 December. And of course, we have fantastic meet-ups before year end.
And our final exciting news. We will be launching a few more Advisory Boards before the end of the year, but it is with great pleasure that we announce our Space advisory Board, this will be looking at geospatial data and the space commons among other relevant areas.
State of Open: The UK in 2024, Phase Three Open Source and Market Shaping
Open source disrupts and shapes markets and of course market factors inhibit or enable its success. We have explored these in our new report launched this week, ‘State of Open, They UK in 20204: Shaping Markets’ with Thought Leadership from former UK Digital Director, Mike Bracken and Iain Mitchell KC, a fireside chat with Lonneke Dreiessen of Open Charge Alliance, who are celebrating 10 years and the OCCP open standard, and case studies from the UK AI Safety Institute, British Library, Canonical/ BT and OpenEHR. |
OpenUK 5th Annual Awards 2024
OpenUK’s 5th Awards, the OpenUK Awards 2024 take place at the House of Lords on 28th November. This Black tie event is truly the “Oscars of Open Source”. Thanks to our Lords Sponsor, Lord Wei for making this possible. We are grateful of course to our sponsors Arm, AutoGPT, Avanade, Control Plane, DevTank, Iain G Mitchell KC, Jetstack Consult, Linaro, Open Data Institute, Red Badger, Runa Capital and Seekr who each provide a category judge and to the Judging panel of Jonathan Riddell, Hannah Foxwell and Tandy Nicole. All 32 shortlisted nominees have been given a free place to attend.
Join us in House of Lords – Round Tables with Policy Makers
OpenUK’s Round Tables in Parliament continue focusing on the grand challenges where open technology can support or is impacted. 25 spaces are available to join the audience at our round tables.
Due to industrial actions, we have postponed the event on November 7th to December 3rd. We are holding your registration and if you cannot make it, please cancel on Eventbrite and email to mailto:admin@openuk.uk. There are only a few places left for this roundtable.
Our 11th December AI Openness table is sold out and has a wait list. Admission is only possible with registration and photo ID. Thanks to Lord Wei for hosting us.
