Where is the year going? Can you believe we are getting ready for SOOCon25 which is only 4 months away. So if you haven’t already saved the date please make sure that it’s in your calendar. Whether you join us as a volunteer, a speaker or an attendee, we will look forward to seeing you in London.
Our policy work continues with reports coming down the line on shaping market, skills and AI and our House or Lords season of monthly round tables.
And look out next time for the OpenUK Awards shortlist being announced. Now in its 5th year, it’s the “Oscar’s of Open Source”.
Save the date for SOOCon25
State of Open Con is in its third year and will be taking place in London on 4/5 February. We will be opening volunteering and launching our CFP in October, so watch this space for more information. Why not get involved and join us for free?
Fellows Network
OpenUK’s first cohort of Fellows will be launched this month, so if you know a postgrad level student who would be interested in taking part in a Fellows Network promoting research into open tech then please share the Fellows Network with them.We are looking for up to 10 Fellows in the UK and up to 2 international academics to join.
Applications will close in October and be judged by CEO, Amanda Brock, Board Director and Rust Foundation ED, Dr Rebecca Rumbul, Open UK’s Research Director Dr Jennifer Barth and Southampton University Associate Professor Dr Rebecca Taylor.
Join us in House of Lords – Round Tables
OpenUK is hosting a number of events in Parliament covering a variety of topics critical to open technology. 20 spaces are available to join the audience at our round table guests from business, academia and parliament on 9 October, 7th November and 11th December Committee Room G, House of Lords. Admission only possible with registration. No dress code. Photographic ID required to gain admission. Thanks to Lord Wei for hosting us.

Since 2021 we’ve reported on open source software and encouraged collaboration across the global research community, hosting bi-monthly, free-to-attend, digital events sharing research being undertaken and reporting coming down the line across the planet and our next session will be December 13th. They take place at 4PM UK and last 60-90 minutes.

October sees a change in the season for us all, and for open source too. A shift is underway, from licence changes taking projects proprietary to companies like Elastic coming back to open source and forked projects like Valley giving a real challenge to those shifting. From the recent articles in the press, to last month’s show and tell and our upcoming meet-up in London you will see OpenUK leading the conversation on this and the grand challenges of the day.
