4th July 2020

You may have noticed we have been busy recognising UK Leadership of Open Technology in the OpenUK Awards and building future leadership not only with the weekly training sessions of our #FutureLeaders Group but also with the OpenUK Kids’ Competition. We will shortly be announcing our Digital Summer Camp for secondary school kids, taking place in August. So, watch this space.

Kids Competition Call for Judges

Our Kids Competition needs you!

Yes, you…..adult…. open source software, open hardware or open data enthusiast or expert.

With the help of Serna Ricci of our Learning Committee, the call for Judges is now Open. We are looking for 3 volunteer judges to join our 6 existing judges.

You can volunteer here:  https://openuk.uk/call-for-kids-competition-judges/ until 5pm BST on 10 July.

Our Learning Committee will view all applications without sight of name or personal details, in line with our diversity policy. The 3 Judges selected will be notified by  31 July and all Judges will be added to our web site in August.

The Kids’ Competition has almost 50 schools taking part across 4 UK Regions (sadly no Welsh schools applied) and will take place in September. Judging will take place between 1 and 4 October and will take around 4 hours of time, reviewing entries.

Amazing 84 Nominations and shortlist

The Awards nominations closed on 30 June, with 84 nominations being received by OpenUK. We are delighted to see many familiar faces and also many new participants nominating and being nominated.  Our Judging panel of Cheryl Hung and Jeni Tennison, ably led by Jonathan Riddell, will be reviewing the accepted nominations and choosing a shortlist of up to 3 nominees in each category by 31 July.

We were delighted to announce a partnership with #FINOS, adding a 6th category to the Awards, for Open Source in Fintech and Financial Services, through a

Awards Ceremony thanks to Bristows’ Sponsorship

We are busy working with Bristows, law firm on the Awards. Thanks to their generosity in sponsoring we have a really special Digital event to look forward to. 130 individuals will attend as OpenUK guests, including volunteers, partners, shortlisted nominees, judges, Kids Competition Regional Winners and a few recipients of FINOS and OpenUK’s diversity scholarship places. All will be in for a treat when their event goody box lands on their doorstep in the days leading up to the Awards. We also plan OpenUK viewing tickets so that anyone who wants to dial in and enjoy the platform is able to.
